I found it very helpful as it pointed out not only whether a student had trouble with first sounds, blends, digraphs, short or long vowels, only with multi syllable words etc but also those students who might not be good readers but are fine decoders. I don’t think giving the Wilson pretest requires any formal training but one needs to be familiar with all the spelling/sounds on it. Someone new to using it could make a copy and write an example word beside any unfamiliar or uncommon spelling/sounds. I would agree that you would not give this to all students but perhaps to those who claimed to have reading problems. One note on the Wilson Reading System: I was not formally trained yet had great success with it but felt that my success would have been even greater if I had the opportunity for the formal training.
