Hi Jennifer,
This is my first posting to this discussion group. My name is Kim, and I work in a detention center teaching literacy and job skills. I also run a program for dropout teens. Both of these programs flip back and forth between being rolling admission and closed classroom. We MUST assess upon admission and discharge to either program in order to document progress for our grant accountability. We also test when we think there has been a level gain. I would strongly recommend that you test upon admission. We use CASAS testing - and it is easily adimistered. It takes about 5-10 minutes of explanation - but then each new student can test while class is ongoing - and you can measure progress levels upon admission and progress achieved at completion. In these days of tightening public/private money - showing that your program is successful is vital to it's continuation.
It requires more work from you - but it allows for individual educational 'prescriptions' for remediation once the testing is scored and weak areas are identified. Once you conference with the student, and set up educational goals (which you keep in their portfolio) - you can track goal achievement as well.
If you wonder how to do this organizationally in class - you can have assigned 'seatwork' that is done the first half hour of class while you conference, begin testing, or score completed tests. Hope this helps.
