Dear Colleagues,

These are several interesting articles...enjoy reading.

FAMILIES AS CONTRACTUAL PARTNERS IN EDUCATION - National Center for the
Study of Privatization in Education, Teacher's College, Columbia University.
In this paper, Henry Levin and Clive Belfield, suggest a new way of
viewing families as "contractual partners" in education, that is, having
families agree to certain obligations.

TIME FOR LEARNING
In a case study titled "Looking Through the Hourglass," Michelle Carr
examined the ways teachers and students spend minutes and hours. When
teachers have too little time or misuse the time they have, she concluded,
they hurry through planning, cram whole curriculum topics into short units
and lessons, and rush students through their studies. "The most important
thing I learned," she said, "is the power a teacher has to slow time down
so students can think, ponder, question, and truly learn." Some educators
blame an overflowing curriculum and new testing requirements for a squeeze
on time. Others blame inexperienced teachers for wasting instructional
time on routine administrative tasks. According to Susan Black, the best
practices associated with teaching and learning are respectful of time
without being a slave to time. Still, school leaders should help teachers
think about managing academic learning so it's more productive.
