It has been an interesting challenge for me to see how effectively I can help them begin to speak and read. I keep trying several different methods and ways of presenting materials to see what works and what doesn't with them and in the meanwhile am developing my own materials. So I am constantly seeking new viewpoints of how this should be approached and what are methods that really work for this type of adult illiterate population. Frankly with this older group, I have big doubts about using phonics. It sounds like a good strategy but in reality..... The younger students(30's and under) seem to understand and grasp the concept but not the older larger group and I don't push the strategy with them. I get blank stares, they see this as being a silly activity as far as any consonant substitution type of activity, and not useful to them. So this is why I have joined this list,..... for information. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Dirose7@aol.com> To: "Multiple recipients of list" <nifl-assessment@literacy.nifl.gov> Sent: Monday, June 02, 2003 10:40 PM Subject: [NIFL-ASSESSMENT:251] Why did you join? > Dear List Participants: > > Just returned from an informative meeting of the NIFL list moderators. I am eager to try to energize activity and dialogue. It would be enormously helpful if you could take a moment and respond to the question: > Why did I join the assessment list? > > Your answers will help generate new topics for discussion and opportunities to exchange ideas and practice about assessment with your colleagues across the country.
