Some schools use the locator and then the A,D,M, or E Surveys to find out what level of curriculum to put the student in. Some schools only use the D level survey and use that score to place their students. The latter procedure is used because of the doubled hours that the former method uses. I would like to have a middle road: Cut the locator in half (have the students do every other question) and likewise cut the survey in half. These tests are not all that accurate anyway, no matter which method you use. Ultimately, it becomes the teacher who properly places the student after working with him awhile. I believe that cutting locator and survey in half would give the same information with just as much accuracy. Certainly, there would be enough accuracy to place the student as well as the full test does; which is, as stated, flawed anyway. My questions are: Has anyone seen any studies or information that would support my desire to cut the Locator and Survey in half without losing the authority of the test. Has any one used a state accepted assessment that allows for placing the student within the TABE skill levels (A,D,M, and E) and does this in under say an hour of testing?
