Hi everyone,

Below are a couple of resources that are related to our recent discussions
about V&R. You can get them both from the Assessment Collection
(http://literacy.kent.edu/Midwest/assessment/).

Reminder: The handy-dandy Assessment Glossary can be easily accessed at the
homepage of the Assessment Collection: Look under Quick Reference.

Coming soon!!! Adventures in Assessment Volume 16, due out next month,
contains several invaluable articles including:
"How to Do Your Best on Standardized Tests: Some Suggestions for Adult
Learners"
"Integrating Goal Setting into Instructional Practice"
"A Basic Primer for Understanding Standardized Tests and Using Test Scores"
"Using Data for Program Improvement"

It's REALLY good this issue! I'll keep you posted!

Go and get these now! (if you want to!)

Look in Teacher/Tutor Resources - Assessment Basics for:
Valid, Reliable, and Appropriate Assessments for Adult English Language
Learners
http://www.cal.org/ncle/digests/langassessQA.htm
This Q&A examines the concepts of validity, reliability, and appropriateness
from a language testing perspective as they apply to the following four
assessment issues raised by the NRS: What type of language assessment seems
to be required by the NRS: proficiency or achievement? What type of
assessment would be most appropriate for the NRS? What does validity entail
for appropriate NRS assessment? What does reliability mean for performance
measures meeting the rigorous requirements of the NRS? An invaluable
resource for practitioners and program managers of ESOL in understanding
important notions of testing as they related to the specific requirements of
the National Reporting System.

Look in Research for:
Performance Assessments for Adult Education: Exploring the Measurement
Issues: Report of a Workshop
http://www.nap.edu/books/0309084539/html/
Jointly commissioned by the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) and ED's
Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE), the report was designed to
provide both agencies with background information on how to set quality
guidelines for alternative assessments. While the explicit focus of the
study is Quality Standards for Performance Assessment, the report provides
clear and useful information about quality criteria for all assessments used
for both formative (teaching and learning) and summative (reporting)
purposes. It also examines particular challenges of assessment in adult
education, including challenges to validity that arise due to: 1) the
relative insensitivity of the reporting scales of the NRS to small gains; 2)
difficulties in interpreting gain scores; and 3) difficulties in comparing
assessments across programs and states, due to the lack of a common content
framework.

Enjoy! and let me know how you find these resources.
