There are a few ideas for assessing lower level literacy and ESOL learners at the Assessment Special Collection. You can check out the Bader language inventory, under Assessment Tools: http://literacy.kent.edu/Midwest/assessment/tools.html Also, for program/teacher made assessments that are not commercially produced, you can take a look at Adventures in Assessment under Teacher/Tutor Resources: http://literacy.kent.edu/Midwest/assessment/teacher_tutor.html If you scroll to Volume 15, the last article in that volume has an annotated bibliography of all the articles in Adventures that focus on intake, placement, and goal-setting - so much of the material is about diagnostic assessments. This is not at the Special Collection, but I know that many folks use the DAR or DARTTs for lower level literacy, even though that tool was originally designed for work with children. It's quite adaptive for the adult learner. The publisher is Riverside and the link to that assessment is http://www.riverpub.com/products/group/dartts/pricing.html Perhaps others on the list will have some further recommendations for you. As for using the MBTI - I would like to know/learn about that too!! Anyone out there help Jean with this piece? Gosh, I hate to pick on people, but Eileen - you came to mind when Jean described this resource. Are you familiar with it at all? MBTI and ABE? Hi everyone. I'm new to this list, so I hope I'm not being redundant. We're in the process of beginning a program at our church, and are collaborating with the folks from Literacy Volunteers of RI, who have been training our tutors and testing our students. We're seeing a need to do our own student testing as word is spreading about our program. What do you recommend as the best diagnostic-prescriptive tool for assessing the lowest literacy level learners? We have mostly non-readers coming, many recently immigrating from Liberia with no schooling. Secondly, I'm wondering if there is anyone on the list using the MBTI with their literacy learners. I'm doing my PhD on learning styles and low literacy learners, and see potential here after looking at the general implications of the MBTI and education. Any insights are appreciated. Thanks. Jean Marrapodi
