(Robin, are you out there? Correct me if I'm wrong.) She has written an excellent paper (.pdf file with live links) available at http://ldlink.coe.utk.edu/pdf_files/esl_ld.pdf that includes information about how learning disabilities affect an English language learner, the problems in identifying LD in an ESL/ESOL learner, and how adult education programs support these learners. Rather than repeat what she has already communicated so well in this paper, I suggest that anyone working with ESOL students read this publication. Also, if you're not familiar with the LINCS LD site at http://ldlink.coe.utk.edu/, the Center for Literacy Studies in Tennessee has really done a great job with presenting a ton of information about adults with learning disabilities in a wonderful LD-accessible format. I guess it's also worth mentioning that every time I conduct a workshop about adults with learning disabilities, the ESOL teachers are consistently amazed at the crossover of instructional strategies. Hands-on, concrete, multisensory,real-life learning works well for both of those populations.
