   Subject: New free NCLE pubs

Hi,

Since the last time I posted information on National
Clearinghouse for ESL Literacy Educaiton (NCLE) pubs, three new
digests have been published and are available for the asking.

They include:

1. Philosophies and Approaches in Adult ESL Literacy Instruction
by Joy Peyton and JoAnn Crandall. Participatory approaches,
whole language, the language experience approach, learner writing
and publishing, and competency-based education are discussed and
referenced. A resource list of commercially available learner
writing is included.

2. Evaluating Workplace ESL Instructional Programs by Miriam Burt
and Mark Saccomano. This digest lookes at evaluation measures
and activities used in workplace programs and examines some of
the issues associated with the evaluation of workplace ESL
programs.

3. Adult ESL Learner Asssessment: Purposes and Tools by Miriam
Burt and Fran Keenan. The pros and cons both of commercially
available tests and alternative assessment tools are examined.
Differences between program evaluation and and learner assessment
are also discussed. The digest concludes with references and
resources for assessment.

To get a copy of these digests, or any other NCLE digests and
minibibs, you can

1. call NCLE at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) (202)
429-9292, ext 200

2. email me (Miriam Burt) at miriam@cal.org
BUT BE SURE TO SEND A COMPLETE MAILING ADDRESS IF YOU DO THIS.
EMAIL WILL NOT SUFFICE
