The following was posted on the NLA list 10/21 by Carl Grove after
appearing on the American Dialect Society list.
----------

The following is a list of 21 states that have English Only
legislation in place: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California,
Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky,
Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina,
North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and Virginia.
Hawaii recognizes both Hawaiian and English as official.

The person posting the message (Nancy Sullivan
<sullivan@falcon.tamucc.edu>) also believes there are 22 states with
official English laws and was looking for the 22nd. Any help would be
appreciated.

Please post replies to this list (NIFL-ESL) and they will be
forwarded to Nancy Sullivan and Carl Grove.
