Thanks to Alice Johnson for the following:
As part of the student loan changes currently being considered by
Congress, House and Senate negotiators are wrestling with a plan
that
would narrow federal student aid eligibility for LEGAL
immigrants.
In 1992-93, nearly 400,000 legal immigrants received $662
million in
Pell grants. (This is about 10 percent of the total of Pell
recipients.)
Republicans want to change eligibility by including the income
of
citizens who sponsor immigrants when determining whether or not
the
immigrants can receive student aid. This would reduce the
number of
immigrants who would be considered eligible.
