Alice Johnson of the National Institute for Literacy contributed the

The National Center for Education Statistics recently released a
report, "The Educational Progress of Hispanic Students." It includes
the following:
* Dropout rates among Hispanic high school students are
declining. In addition, dropping out is strongly related to the
length of time a Hispanic family has lived in the U.S. and to the
family's country of origin.
* Educational attainment is positively associated with
employment and earnings of Hispanics, yet earnings and employment
rates are lower for Hispanics than for their non Hispanic white
counterparts with the same amount of education.
* Hispanic students are less likely than their non Hispanic
white counterparts to take advanced math and science courses, but
just as likely to take foreign languages.
* Hispanic students are about as likely as non Hispanic white
students to make the immediate transition from high school to
college.
