GOOD NEWS! President Clinton this afternoon will tape a radio address
on literacy that will air nationwide tomorrow morning.

He will highlight literacy as a critical part of the solution to our
nation's most pressing social problems and will focus on the
importance of literacy for all children AND all adults.

According to a working draft of the document, the President's message
     will include the following:

"Literacy is about reading -- but it is about much more. It's about
opportunity -- ensuring that every child and adult can learn the
lessons of our past, and take advantage of our future. It is about
giving people the tools to make the most of their God-given potential.
Without literacy, the history books are closed, the Internet is turned
off, and the promise of America is that much harder to reach."

My understanding is that in most places it runs around 10:00 AM, but
you may want to check your local listings to see what station(s) it
     airs on in your area.

The radio address provides an excellent opportunity for the field. One
way to maximize its impact is to follow up with letters to the editor
of newspapers across the country that quote a line or two of the
address then talk about literacy efforts that are going on and how
literacy is making a difference in that community.

The full text of the address will be available Monday on the Internet
     on LINCS (http://novel.nifl.gov).

     Happy Holidays!
