As you can see, I am asking for people to send comments to Tom regarding Crossroads Cafe particularly as it relates to beginning level students. I would guess that comments regarding intermediate students would also be appreciated by readers. Tom: Granted this comes from a biased source, but I would be remiss if I did not tell you there are over 2500 sets of Crossroads Cafe in distribution since it debuted last October and many of those using the materials are doing so with beginning level students. As you know Crossroads Cafe is a complete ESL curriculum from beginning low through intermediate high. It was initially envisioned as an intermediate level curriculum. However after completeing the first level formative evaluation it was clear that the field wanted and needed Crossroads Cafe to serve the classroom and distance learning needs of beginning level students literate in their native language. As such, the National Academic Council created the Photo Stories texts. Many teachers and volunteers are using these print materials along with the video very effectively. If you would like to see some evaluation material on the subject please let me know. In the meantime, perhaps there are others who are using Crossroads Cafe who could respond to Tom. By the way Heinle & Heinle has just published a Student Assessment Package for the series. The package assesses students progress through the video and print materials. INTELECOM is is now making transcripts of each video episode available as well. I stated I was biased because I work for INTELECOM, the developer and producer of the series. We are quite pleased at the response of the field and are currently in development and production of a companion citizenship series to debut in the fall of '98. In fact, a meeting of this project's National Academic Council took place this weekend. Looking forward to your response and from hearing from others who are using Crossroads Cafe. Much thanks, Bob Miller
