This is a reply to Anna Silliman's question for reading, lesson, or text
about nutrition that would be suitable for adult ESL students.

The Assocation of Farmworker Opportunity Programs (1611 North Kent St., Suite
910, Arlington, VA 22209 tel 703-528-4141) has two excellent publications.
One is called "A Taste of English" and is a nutrition workbook for adult ESL
students (eight lessons ranging from knowing how your body works, to healthy
meals, to shopping tips, to glossary of foods. The other is called "Radio
Nutricion" and is a program for nutrition education with the Hispanic
community (series of audio cassettes with service provider's guide. Tapes
are in Spanish, guide is in English and Spanish.

Another source is The Health Promotion Council in Philadephia ((311 South
Juniper St., Suite 308, Philadephia, PA 19107, phone 215-546-1276. They have
a series of easy to read pamphlets on nutrition that would make good reading
materials plus some nutrition guides, videos and cookbooks in spanish.

Yet another resource is the Nutrition Information Bulletin Board and Learning
Experience (NIBBLE) developed at the University of Massachusetts Dept. of
Nutrition at the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (email to
ritabo@nutrition.umass.edu). This is not specifically geared to ESL students
but much would be applicable and it does provide an computer based
inter-active experience.

And finally , there were some cookbooks with nutritional guides developed by
adult ESL students in Massachusetts that would make great reading, writing
and experiential lessons. Email me (mdrewhohn@aol.com)\ for these.

Hope all this helps, Marcia Hohn, List Moderator
