ACT PLANS FALL 1998 INTRODUCTION FOR ESL TEST

Next Fall, ACT will offer a comprehensive, computer-adaptive test in
English as a Second Language (ESL). This new placement test for
college and university use will include measures in reading, grammar,
and usage, and listening. The test has been designed to accurately
differentiate proficiency at all levels; from beginning to advanced;
allow students to work at their own pace; provide suitable contexts
for test items; and provide placement scores as well as proficiency
descriptors based on student performance.

The computer-adaptive test automatically adjusts to each examinee's
level of skill. Correct answers prompt the computer to present
increasingly difficult test items, while incorrect answers trigger
easier ones. Thus, the computer is able to rapidly determine skill
levels. The score reporting format allows institutions to collect
relevant information about test takers and to record the scores they
earn on local assessments, such as writing or speaking measures.

The ACT ESL test will be available in Fall 1998. If you would like
to have your institution participate in pretesting (requires
involvement of 200 ESL students) or wish to be placed on the ESL
update mailing list, call Eileen Forman at 319-337-1054; F:
319-337-1790; e-mail: FormanE@act.org
