The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL)
and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress
cordially invite you to

a presentation and discussion on

The Politics of Language and Literacy

Wednesday, October 22, 1997
8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Mumford Room, 6th floor
Library of Congress, James Madison Building

Coffee and pastries will be served from 8:30 to 9:00.

Today?s vigorous debates on immigration and assimilation reach
farther back than many realize and include a tradition of tolerance
as well as intolerance toward multi-lingualism and bilingual
education. Two expert researchers and authors, Terrence Wiley and
Reynaldo Mac?as, will show how, in this country, our official
policies toward language and literacy, including bilingual education,
have some surprising roots. Afterwards, Deborah Tannen, University
Professor of Linguistics at Gerogetown University, will lead a
discussion with the presenters and audience.

Drs. Mac?as and Wiley have recently written or contributed to books
published by the Center for Applied Linguistics and Delta Systems.
Copies of Dr. Wiley?s Literacy and Language Diversity in the United
States (1996) will be on display. Both Mac?as and Wiley contributed
to the forthcoming re-issue (1997) of The American Bilingual
Tradition by Heinz Kloss.
