Genevieve,

I am the family/ESL coordinator for a local literacy program. Our program
serves Hispanic workers who are employed at a local nursery. They live and
work on the property. We serve the adults through a multi-level setting.
We work closely with the human resource director to find who the leaders are
at work and encourage leadership in class. In our particular situation
these men have their families living here with them. We offer classes in a
multi purpose building on the property. Prior to its being built we had
classes at various locations in the area. On-site has made a tremendous
difference in consistent attendance. We have tried to integrate the women
into the classes with little luck. However, when we run a separate class
for women and children we find that we have good attendance. We focus on
lifeskills, work related topics, and school issues. Basically, whatever the
students say they need is what we teach. Also, we network constantly with
other agencies that are servicing these folks. WIC, elementary schools,
social security office, drivers license bureau, county extension office,
food pantries, clothing pantries, health care providers, Lions clubs for
eyeglasses, church groups, etc. One thing we found that helped establish
good rapport with this small community was to arrange for a church service
in Spanish. This was very important to our students and required only a few
phone calls. I have had the pleasure of working with this business for over
five years, most of the faces of our students have changed, but it has been
the most rewarding experience of my time in adult literacy.
