Times poll, 84% of Hispanic registered voters would vote in favor of a proposed ballot initiative that would effectively end bilingual education in California's public schools and replace it with an English-immersion program. 80% of whites also support the initiative. If past history is any guide, the numbers will go down as the election approaches, as happend with Proposition 187; 52% of Hispanics supported that initiative 2 months before the election in 1994, but 77% of Hispanics voted against it (This is reported in Hispanic Link Weekly Report, Oct. 20, 1997, first page).
