I agree wholeheartedly with Dr. Cline's comments about language
maintenance and dual immersion programs, and especially about opposing
Unz. It seems to me that the Unz initiative would make it very difficult
to do anything about improving implementation on a broad scale, thus
actively opposing it, either in the political arena or in the legal arena
is a first step. I couldn't agree more that bilingual education has been
inappropriately implemented.

Jim Crawford sends some interesting information about the Unz initiative,
as well as the address for his home page (and other home pages) which
contains more (e.g. newspaper articles etc.) for those who are
interested.

I don't want to drag this discussion farther than is helpful (it's a
passionate research area for me). Let me know.

The most detailed legal analysis of the Unz initiative that I'm
aware of comes from MALDEF, which has posted it on the Web at:
        http://www.maldef.org/bieduc/unzdoc.htm
It notes some challenges that could be mounted in court, should the measure
pass. Naturally, those who are likely to file such a case (e.g., MALDEF,
CABE, META, etc.) are unlikely to reveal much of their strategy ahead of
time. Still, I'm hoping to find someone who's qualified & willing to
explain -- for purposes of the public debate -- Unz's potential conflict
with Lau, Castaneda, etc. Then I'll post it on my own home page.
By the way, I have assembled a lots of news clips and analytical
articles on the Unz initiative and related matters on my Language Policy
Web Site at:
