NIFL-ESL Colleagues,

>From March 27th - 29th, 1998, a history-making event will
take place at the Highlander Center in New Market, Tennessee.
A group of 35-40 adult learner leaders from across the U.S.
will gather to create a national adult literacy student
organization. The Highlander Center has for years nurtured
literacy, labor, civil rights and other social change movements
in the South, and has attracted leaders from across the country
who have returned to make a difference in their communities;
it is an especially fitting place for the birth of this organization.

A small group of adult learners and practitioners has been
meeting by telephone to plan this three-day meeting, and the
application forms will be ready by mid-December. Since the
applications will have a January 15th deadline, please tell
potential adult learner applicants about this now. We also
want to notify those who may wish to publish the application
in newsletters, announcements, or in other ways, that they can
expect it to be posted to this listserv and ready for
downloading and printing, in the next two weeks.

The adult learner-driven Highlander planning group is actively
engaged in fundraising activities now, seeking grants from
foundations and corporations, and contributions from
individuals, to underwrite some of the costs of this event. We
hope to cover partial costs for participants who could not
otherwise attend, but we also expect them to get help from
state and local adult literacy agencies and organizations.

Stay tuned to this listserv for more information in the next two
weeks.

Archie Willard
