Dear Supporters of Adult Learner Leadership,

A steering committee composed of adult learner leaders and adult
education
professionals is currently planning a three-day meeting to be held at
the
Highlander Center in Tennessee in late March, 1998. This committee was
organized and is headed by adult learner leader (and former National
Institute for Literacy fellow) Archie Willard.

Between 35 and 40 adult learners from around the U.S. will attend that
meeting, along with a half dozen adult education professionals. These
learners will represent a broad mix of programs, geographic locations,
and
demographics (race, gender, age, etc.) The learners will discuss. . .

. . . what the goals of a national adult learner organization should be,
. . . who might participate in the organization,
. . . what activities such an organization can provide for its members
and for the adult education field,
. . . how the organization should be structured and supported.

The steering committee is now seeking funding from individuals and
organizations around the country, to help defray some of the travel and
room and board costs of those participating. The committee also hopes
to
be able to set aside some additional funds to serve as Òseed moneyÓ for
whatever new organization might emerge from this meeting.

The committee has put together a detailed plan for three stages of adult
learner leadership activities. The Highlander meeting would constitute
the first of those three stages. This plan is available on request.

The nonprofit organization, Learning Partnerships, has agreed to serve
as
fiscal agent to manage funds donated for the Highlander meeting.

If you or your organization are interested in supporting this meeting in
even a small way, please send your tax-deductible donations to Learning
Partnerships at the address below.

Individuals are asked to consider donations in the range of $25 to $100,
and organizations might consider gifts of between $500 and $1000. The
steering committee of course welcomes donations of all sizes. Upon
request, we can send you a letter acknowledging your donation, for
tax-reporting purposes.

On behalf of the steering committee which is organizing this meeting, I
thank you for your support for adult learners and adult learning.
