Instead, there seems to be some serious, political dialogue in a field that rarely engages in talk about the real politics and implications of teaching "assimiliation" and imperial Western (i.e., American) culture. I am an ESL and citizenship instructor and I grapple with such issues on a daily basis. Yes, it is a reality that ignorant and racist individuals are teaching ESL. Racist institutions are funded to assimilation immigrants and migrant workers into "mainstream" English speaking society. This is a reality that exists. Racism (and its inherent ignorance) is dirty and impolite and slings mud all over the place! Kira Litvin BGSU, Ohio
