This is a model which has met with enormous success, particularly when the training is participatory and grounded in meaning-centered pedagogical approaches. It has been pioneered by community-based programs; unfortunately, however, it is often difficult to sustain both the funding and the training contexts (as funding is often curtailed after a limited training cycle). This approach is documented in "From the Community to the Community: A Guidebook for Participatory Literacy Training" (Auerbach with Barahona, Midy, Vaquerano, ZAmbrano and Arnaud, Lawrence Erlbaum Publishers, 1996). Training promising people with strong work histories and skills from their native countries to be ESL/LITERACy instructors serves several needs at once: it brings an invaluable resource to our field while at the same time providing an entry point for those who are being trained. It is a way to serve community needs by drawing on community resources. Elsa Auerbach UMass Boston
