Dear Carol,

Using family stories and family histories are always a good way to start. I've started the topic of family by beginning with Sandra Cisnero's story "My Name" from The House on Mango Street. It's short enough that your intermediate students can read it themselves, or you can read it to the class. Then move on to a discussion, or a short writing, asking students to write about their own name - or the name of someone in their family. Then I ask students to share their stories. There is usually a rich discussion of family that can be taken in many directions.

Happy Holidays to all!

I'm looking for suggestions for teaching the topic of family to a
multi-level adult literacy class. I have beginners and some
intermediates.

Thank you.
