Jan,

Adult Options in Education offers a ready-for-work program which is free and
given under the umbrella of the Community Education department of our local
school district. Our classes are about half people from the former soviet union,
a third hispanic and the rest many different nationalities. The classes run from
9 AM to 2 PM and many of the people are in a family learning program connected
to us which gives free transportation, lunch and child care. One of their hours
is a parenting course instead of one of the English electives. We have 4 classes
per day: vocabulary building, grammar, and 2 electives from which they may
choose speaking and listening, employment seeking, computer lab or family
education (if they are in that program)

Most of the students are not working, but quite a few are, working 3rd shift or
in some cases leaving early to get to a job. They all are very motivated because
they realize that better English will help them find a job or a better job.

I realize I have more than answered your question! Bernice
