We also use the Wilson Reading System — so far just for English-speaking adult students. It is multisensory, highly interactive, gives students necessary practice in a well-paced format which involves the students in reading, spelling, and word structure. Concepts are introduced as students manipulate sound cards, word cards, syllable cards. This is direct instruction in phonemic awareness which is designed to "break the guessing habit". Students build skills so that they KNOW the sounds and thus can READ and spell the words with confidence.

We have not yet tried to use WRS with ESL students because the vocabulary may not contain words that ESL students know or need to know. How have you addressed that--or do you not find that a problem?

Sorry, that this reply is so late. I am obviously way behind in reading listserv messages!
