Greetings--
I'd like to thank all those on the list who
have sent me info about the US Census 2000 for
the adult ESL classroom.
I am still in the process of looking for
teaching ideas. In the meantime I have two notes
to share with you:

1. A Teaching Guide for Adult ESL called "Census 2000,
from Understanding to Participation" has been printed and
mailed out by the Census Bureau. It is not that great,
in my opinion, but it does have some useful features--
a beautiful wall map of the US with population data on it,
a copy of the Sample Short Form which you can work on with
your students for practice, some teaching suggestions you
might be able to adapt, and plenty of information to pass
along. All of this is reproducible. You can request that
a copy be mailed to you at: www.census.gov (click on Census
in Schools, then on "How to order"--here you'll see a phone
number and email address for the Adult ESL/Literacy material.

2. A simplified reading about the census which you can share
with your students has been posted on our website,
http://www.handsonenglish.com (see current events activity).
This was submitted by Jill Kramer and edited by myself;
you are welcome to make use of it.

     Thank you!
Best wishes,
Anna
