New from NCLE - digests, webpage updates, and NCLEnotes

Digests:

Two new digests are available from NCLE now and are up on our webpage; a third one will be available next week.

The first digest is a long-awaited update of "Native Language Literacy and Adult ESL Instruction" by Klaudia Rivera. Dr. Rivera wrote the original in 1990, and it has remained popular throughout the decade. The new digest discusses recent research with adults and children pointing to the value of native language literacy. It also describes program models for native language literacy instruction and lists resources for further information.

The second is entitled "Poetry in the Adult ESL Classroom," and it was written by NCLE's director, Joy Peyton and by Pat Rigg (co-author of Enriching our Lives: Poetry Lessons for Adult Literacy Teachers and Tutors, a textbook published by the International Reading Association in 1995.) This digest discusses ways to select, read, and write poetry in adult ESL classes, and it includes a list of poetry collections that include poems whose style, topic, and structure should appeal to adults learning English.

The third digest, "Mental Health and the Adult Refugee: The Role of the ESL Teacher," is at the printer's and should be available and on our website next week. Written by Myrna Ann Adkins and Barbara Sample of the Spring Institute for International Studies and by Dr. Dina Birman of the Georgetown University Medical Center, it addresses both ESL and mental health issues of refugees and other adult immigrants. Three things ESL teachers can do to facilitate language and cultural learning while helping their learners with mental health issues are explored.
