NCLE staff have been working with educators and researchers in adult ESL to refine and update The Research Agenda for Adult ESL (NCLE, 1998). This agenda summarizes what we know in five broad areas of interest and identifies research that still needs to be done in each area. * learner characteristics and needs * program design and instructional content and practices * teacher preparation and staff development * learner assessment and outcomes * policy The next public discussion of the agenda will take place at the TESOL convention in Vancouver, BC, on Friday, March 17, 2000 from 8:30-10:15 in the Convention Centre, Room 15. A colloquium entitled "Research Directions in Adult ESL" will bring together a panel to discuss research findings in the areas listed above and to facilitate small group discussions to identify ongoing research needs. You can make a valuable contribution to this effort by letting us know about research studies that are underway. If you do know of such studies, in the areas listed above or in other areas, please let us know (by writing to us individually not to the entire list; carol@cal.org, joy@cal.org). Please send a brief description of the research and sources of further information (a publication or a contact person). Your contribution will be acknowledged at the TESOL colloquium and in the next published version of the agenda. THANKS AHEAD OF TIME FOR YOUR HELP WITH THIS IMPORTANT PROJECT! You can read the current version of the research agenda on NCLE's Web site (www.cal/ncle/agenda). We'd be happy to send you a print copy as well. Just let us know!
