In other words, you won't be able to tell whether they are now able to understand a lecture or a TV or radio commentary, wether they can take part in a discussion or conversation on a topic of interest to them, or if they can give an opinion or explain an idea (in verbal or written form). As mentioned in the previous post, it will tell you, however, how well they score compared to native speakers and others who took the same test or what grade level equivalent corresponds to their performance on the test. I would say the bigger question is: What changes in your students' skills are you hoping to see through your Action Research Project? And if the answer is, "increases in general reading skills" the TABE might be appropriate P.S. I am coming to this discussion late, having been "off the list" for a bit. So if the above has been discussed at length already I apologize cheers Heide Spruck Wrigley San Mateo -----Original Message----- From: K Dorn [mailto:kdorn@arkansas.net] Sent: Friday, March 03, 2000 9:17 AM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: [NIFL-ESL:4162] Re: TABE and ESOL The TABE will give you a grade level in three areas, Reading, Math, and Language. There are 5 different levels of the TABE test. You will need to give a locater portion of the test first. From this section it will tell you what Survey level test to use with that individual. From this score it will give you the grade level that the individual is functioning on in that particular subject. So, in essence you are testing that individual twice. ----- Original Message ----- From: Pat Sawyer <alpat@multipro.com> To: Multiple recipients of list <nifl-esl@literacy.nifl.gov> Sent: Friday, March 03, 2000 10:24 AM Subject: [NIFL-ESL:4161] TABE and ESOL > This is a multi-part message in MIME format. > > ------=_NextPart_000_0075_01BF84FD.E8CE74E0 > Content-Type: text/plain; > charset="iso-8859-1" > Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable > > As part of an Action Research Project, I am interested in using the = > TABE for advanced level ESOL students.
