Yes, we do. I am not sure if you are the hospital or the literacy center, but this is what we do:

We have literacy classes in community centers, elementary schools, churches, college campuses, etc. etc. For a couple of weeks we spend 12 to 24 hours in each of these classes engaging health related materials. We do reading, writing and discussions, but the topics are health related. We partner with local health entities and we use their materials. furthermore, the health entities send representatives to the classes to facilitate information and provide services. I can give you more info or discuss our program in more detail if you like.

I'm researching the idea of our hospital literacy program partnering with
community centers, where our patient congregate, to offer ESL classes. We
tried offering classes on site, but they were poorly attended (attendance
fell to zero). We feel we would be more successful going out into the
community rather than asking the community to come to us. The classes
would use health materials, our mission two-fold: teach them English while
promoting wellness.

Do any of you know of similar programs?

Thank you.
Kristina
