In case it's not too late, I'd like to suggest that, under
"definitions of literacy," in the Adult ESL vision statement, there be
specific mention of Equipped for the Future's definition of literacy,
which includes communication, decision-making, interpersonal, and
lifelong learning skills. This expanded notion of literacy is relevant
to EAL adults because it promotes access to a broader range of skills
for all adults. It suggests that, in order to reach their own goals,
immigrant adults may need skills other than communication skills
(advocacy, research, technology, etc.) and that native-born adults may
need some of those skills that are traditionally reserved for EAL
(listening, working across difference, etc.).
