ACTION ALERT
Call the White House RE: LIFA TODAY!
Coalition Members & Friends,
It is highly likely that the Latino and Immigrant Fairness Act ('LIFA' -
S.2912) will be included in The Departments of State, Commerce, and
Justice
Appropriations Bill. President Clinton has vowed to veto this spending
bill
if it does not contain LIFA. This is our best chance to get LIFA
passed,
and there may not be another one soon. It is now very important that we
let
the President know how important it is to us that he stand strong on
this
promise!
Latino & Immigrant Fairness Act (S.2912)
* Central American and Haitian (NACARA/HRIFA)
Parity:
Establish equal consideration for residency for immigrants from Central
American and Caribbean countries.
* Registry Update: Update the law that allows
long-time immigrants to get permanent residency so that it includes
everyone
present in the US since 1986. The registry cut-off date is currently
1972.
* Restore 245(i): Enable immigrants to get legal
status while remaining in the US. At present, undocumented immigrants
who
began the application process after January 14, 1998 can complete the
process only by leaving the US and going to a US consulate in a foreign
country. Leaving the country risks triggering a 3- or 10-year bar to
returning.
Our Message is: "Don't let the legislation session end without passing
LIFA."
