Literacy volunteers of America stands behind its practice of reading aloud
to adult new readers. When you think about it, it's a common household
practice. One spouse reads from the paper a bit that caught his interest so
his wife can continue doing dishes or whatever.

The theory behind why this is a good practice for improving reading is
contained in the book TUTOR available through LVA.
