I cannot remember my father wither something in his hand to be read - the newspaper, a scrap of a book he found interesting, a selection of classical and/or biblical materials he was poring over. He read aloud to all of us -- in a number of languages. If we understood, we stayed - if we didn't we went to another oom. I learned a great deal about the process and the joy of reading by being read to as small child - I learned lots of language and many nuances of speech. I recommend reading aloud to adults in every session. "this is what I saw in today's paper ..." Students should have copy of the articles as you read - its a great multisensory and provides much multicultural experience. It trains the ear to listen to English phonemic .. and to the rhythm of the language - its prosody. It creates a bond between teacher and student (you trust them to understand what you reading - they will sooner or later). It also gives a great deal of information to students. Try it!
