Hi Myriam,

Did you check out the INS site with regard to work/visa permits ?

I am an immigrant and have been through the process myself

Looks like it could be an H-1B visa - the company pays for the visa, but the
recipient has to work for that company for I think 3 years (and can be
renewed.) There is a restriction on how many H-1Bs are issued every year.

Or it could be a work permit. The work permit allows the recipient to work
in the US, but is not proof of citizenship or permanent residency. If the
student is in school, she may be able to get a practical training visa,
which I believe is valid for one year - you can ask the school about this.
Ask the interested employer if they know about the H-1B visa process -
chances are somebody in their employ has already been through the process.

Otherwise, check out http://www.ins.gov/ - the INS site. You can try calling
them, but the response time is patchy.

Hope this helps.

Jim Hodges.
