The list has been somewhat quiet lately, so I thought it might be a good time to post a repeat of our "netiquette" tips before the new year. Please remember that NIFL-ESL is not a strictly moderated list; messages are not vetted prior to posting. Therefore, we rely on everyone to maintain a constructive, open, and vital discussion that looks at issues and questions of interest to all in the adult ESL field. Anything that is posted to the list should be appropriate for airing among all the participants and should reflect a professional and fair perspective. If anyone would like to discuss the netiquette tips to revise/add, please feel free to email me. I would greatly appreciate your input. Happy Holidays! When you join the list community, please feel free to introduce yourself to other list members. 2. At the end of each message, please include your name, email address and your program or affiliation. Such information is not displayed in headers on all mail systems, so including it at the end of your message will help others when they respond to you. 3. The focus of the NIFL-ESL list is adult English as a second language (ESL). Please be sure to keep your posts relevant to that focus. 4. Be concise. Messages more than two screens in length are difficult for some participants to read. Clear, focused messages are easier to handle and tend to move the discussion along at a lively pace. 5. Before you send a reply, consider if it should go to everyone on the list or just to the person to whose message you are replying. If you think it will be of general interest, then send it to the list. If not, be sure to reply to the individual's email address, not to the list address. 6. When you are replying to a posted message, it helps readers if you quote the part of the message (usually not the whole message) that you are replying to. All list readers will then respond to your message in the proper context. 7. Many of us have found that learning is promoted by dialogue in a spirit of inquiry, curiosity, and mutual respect. Please conduct your discussions in that spirit on this list. 8.Messages which attack or criticize the practices of a specific service provider, organization, or individual do not further the spirit of the NIFL-ESL list. Please be sure to focus on issues in general rather than on the practices of specific organizations or individuals. 9. Email messages typed in all capitals or which use multiple exclamation points are considered "shouting" in email formats, so please be considerate of other list members and avoid this practice. 10. Be cautious in using sarcasm on the Internet. Comments made in jest may not always appear that way to other readers. Because of the immediate nature of electronic communication, email messages do not always receive the same examination as other written communication. Sarcastic or ironic messages can be marked with "emoticons", for example a typed grin [i.e. <g> or <grin>] or with a sideways smiley. [i.e. :) or :)] 11. Commercial adverstisements are not appropriate on this list.
