It is an segregationist imposition to keep some people oppressed for whatever reason. I don't determine if someone is a member of my community by an assigned number. When I interact with people in my community, I consider all people members with human rights. A number on a piece of paper does not make me judge them differently. A number on the piece of paper is nothing more than an abstraction of a historical and sociopolitical circumstance. Making a judgement w/o examining the context is acting w/o understanding. Andres >>> resctr2@ix.netcom.com 04/19/01 07:20PM >>> An upstanding citizen does not drive without a license. It grieves my liberal heart to say so, but rules are rules. And I think it is an injustice to delude our students otherwise. My 17 year old son realizes that a social security number is an inherent part of his membership in this community. As is his driver's license. Isn't it our responsibility as teachers to extend that understanding to our students? Gloria Gillette nifl-esl@nifl.gov wrote: > My scenarioIn California you need a social security number to get a driver license. Therefore many students drive without licences. Here is the scenario: A student is driving and a woman hits him. He has no driver license so he pays for damages for her car. Next he goes to court because he was driving illegally. He gets off lightly with a 200 dollar fine because his teacher writes a letter of support claiming he is an upstanding citizen. This situation worked out ok for the student because he knew how to use resources to help him. Although from a safety standpoint it would be better for him not to drive, that is not the reality. In Southern California many many people are driving illegally. What would be good to discuss is how to deal with police officers, lawyers and judges in this type of situation. BTW...I am not advocating that students drive with no license, it is just the reality. ===== Susan Gaer, Santa Ana College, School of Continuing Education 2900 W Edinger Ave Santa Ana, CA 92704 (714)564-5016 Fax: (714)434-7920 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
