IMMIGRANTS AND HEALTH CARE - New Report Finds Recent Immigrants have
Little Impact on the Uninsured Population
The Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured released a new report on
April 20, 2001: "Is Immigration Responsible for the Growth in the Number of
Uninsured?"
In the report, the health insurance rates of immigrants who had been in the
U.S. for less than four years in 1994 and 1998 were compared. Researchers
found that the number of uninsured among recent immigrants was 100,000 LESS
in 1998 than in 1994.
The report, along with additional publications on immigrants and health
care, can be found on the website of the Kaiser Family Foundation at:

ANTI-IMMIGRANT GROUPS - Southern Policy Law Center Focuses on
Anti-Immigration Movement
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is best known for its monitoring of
and litigation against hate groups. The Spring 2001 issue of their
quarterly magazine INTELLIGENCE REPORT focuses the anti-immigration
movement. The article, "Blood on the Border" reports on the ties between
white supremacist groups, such as the Council of Conservative Citizens, and
anti-immigrant groups, such as the American Immigration Control Foundation
(AICF). (The AICF recently gained some press attention for an inflammatory
direct mail appeal it sent out in some areas of the country.)
Four anti-immigrant groups discussed in the report are designated by SPLC as
"hate groups." They are: the American Immigration Control Foundation, the
National Organization for European American Rights (founded by former Klu
Klux Klansman David Duke), the Social Contract Press, and Voices of Citizens
Together. Other anti-immigrant groups--who try to appear more
"mainstream"--are featured in this report as well, including the Federation
for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), NumbersUSA, V-DARE (a website
associated with Peter Brimelow, author of "Alien Nation"), and other
organizations. The hate groups and the more "mainstream" organizations
share many ties. For example, Roy Beck, who directs NumbersUSA, is also the
Washington Editor of the Social Contract (from the Social Contract Press),
and is also co-author of the latest report from the restrictionist think
tank Center for Immigration Studies. (The report castigates mainstream
environmental organizations for not focusing on U.S. population
stabilization (and immigration control).)
The complete story can be found on the website of the Southern Poverty Law
Center at: http://www.splcenter.org/intelligenceproject/ip-index.html
