I have had requests from people on both of these lists to continue to provide updates on this issue. This one is from Maurice Belanger of the National Immigration Forum. If this is not a topic of interest to you, please feel free to delete. Aliza 245(i) Deadline is April 30. April 30 is the deadline for family and employer sponsors to file for immigrant family members or employees in order for the immigrant's right to adjust status under Section 245(i) to be preserved. By the time you read this, the Immigration and Naturalization Service should have posted on its website at http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/index.htm a list of extended office hours for Saturday, April 28 and Monday, April 30 for those filing at the last minute. In Congress today, Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NB), introduced a bill to extend Section 245(i) for one year, until April 30, 2002. Original co-sponsors on that bill are Senators Kennedy (D-MA), Clinton (D-NY), and Schumer (D-NY). The Senate bill is the third introduced in Congress this year. There are two in the House--one introduced by Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), and one introduced by Rep. Peter King (R-NY). While the bills will not pass before the current provision expires, the Senate bill, with its prominent Republican sponsor, shows a growing interest in Congress in revisiting the 245(i) deadline this year. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) has written a flyer describing how one might file their own family-based petition, as the deadline approaches and legal service providers are unable to assist those who will come to them at the last minute. Attached are a Spanish and English version of the flyer. Below is a note explaining the flyers from Vianey Cano of CHIRLA. ============ Attached, you will find a one-page flyer entitled "How to do our own family-based Petition under 245(i)" that we have prepared thinking of those who will file in the next days, but who will not have anyone assisting them to do it. I have sent it to service providers from the LA area who might find it helpful as we approach the deadline and feel that they will not be able to serve all those who come to their offices and during their group presentations. Please note that the handout indicates that an I-130 is attached, so, if you know of anyone who would like to use it, they should attach a copy of the I-130 or delete that part of the text (paragraph #3). [NOTE: the flyer should also be adapted at the bottom to refer to the INS service center and office in your area. -mb] Content-type: application/msword; name="Guide to File Skeletal I-130 (Spanish).doc"; x-mac-creator="4D535744"; x-mac-type="5738424E" Content-disposition: attachment Content-transfer-encoding: base64
