Can teaching ESL contribute to the devaluation of other languages and
cultures? Sure. But, many, many thousands of teachers are sophisticated
enough to avoid that.
Is it paternalistic to disapprove of teaching ESL? I think so.

Subject: [NIFL-ESL:6598] advice wanted - colonialism and ESL
I am studying to be an ESL teacher. Recently a friend told me she
disaproves of teaching ESL, especially in foreign countries, because it
contributes to the devaluation of other languages and cultures.
Children should not be forced to learn English in school, it will make
them feel their native language is less important.
I would like to know how other ESL teachers deal with this issue. Do
you feel it is a problem in your classroom? What steps do you use to
help students retain their native language while learning English?
I would appreciate any and all viewpoints
