I have used the Molinsky and Bliss "Access" fundamentals of literacy and
Communication (ISBN 0-13-004235-8). It is part of the Side by Side series
and does an excellent job in preparing the studentds for the Side by side
series. I have also found that it is not too difficults to teach basic
literacy in the second language. Initially this might be a little more
difficult but success is very good after a while. I have also experienced
that many of my low literacy students have various learning
disabilities.....I have been fortunate to be able to have close contact with
special education teachers at the public schools who have given me many
