Lately this discussion group has become a public venue for sort of a private
conversation that evolved from a group topic. Probably the slide from public
to private and back to public has interesting rhetorical or sociolinguistic
implications, but I would just like to make the practical suggestion that
everyone be a little more aware that hitting "reply" means what you say goes
to all subscribers and that what's on the subject line should reflect what's
in the message. To reply to an individual, you can copy and paste that
person's e-mail address into the 'to' line of your message. I would be
curious to know if the person who reported his statistical analysis of the
NIFL lists' activity levels a few weeks ago is following up on the critiques
of his findings by monitoring message content and relevance.

I'm very curious as to how I received your message. I just signed up for
the NIFL-ESL discussion group and received verification of my application,
followed by your message to "Andres." That must account for it. The
mention of the voiced/unvoiced minimal pair /th/ brought back fond memories
of working on my masters in linguistics.

Andres,

I sort of thought Kathleen and you might well be connected, but having made
a mega gaffe by 'assuming' that was the case elsewhere, I decided to play it
safe.

cheers
