Re: ACTION ALERT - DOJ meeting resistance on proposed policy to have
local police enforce immigration laws. Need to keep the pressure on!
----------------------------------------------------

UPDATE

As we have reported in previous e-mails, the Department of Justice has
drafted a legal opinion that would reverse a long-standing policy that local
and state police agencies do not have the authority to enforce federal civil
immigration law. The news was leaked to the San Diego Union Tribune on
April 3rd. The Department has not yet released the legal opinion.

In the days following the leak, many police departments across the country,
through their chiefs or other spokespersons, have spoken out against the
Justice Department's idea, because it will reverse progress they have made
in gaining the trust of immigrant communities. The Forum has collected
quotes that we have taken from news stories about this issue as well as from
statements or letters put out by various organizations. The quotes are from
police, police associations, elected and appointed officials, community
leaders and advocates, and newspaper editorial boards.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Before a decision is reached and announced, it is important to show that the
Justice Department proposal will be met with widespread opposition. The
many statements from police and police associations have been helpful, as
they are the best messengers to deliver a message on a law enforcement
matter. We would like to see many more law enforcement agencies and other
community leaders speak out on this issue prior to the announcement.

- Please reach out to your local law enforcement agencies and find out
if they can speak out on this issue, or write a letter to the Attorney
General. You can use the quotes page, attached as a Word file, to let them
know they are in good company. Other good messengers on this issue are
mayors, county executives, and other elected officials.

If your local police or community leaders do speak out on this issue and
either write a letter or are quoted in the local press, please pass this
information on to the Forum. We continue to compile a list of law
enforcement organizations and local officials who are opposed to the Justice
Department's proposal. Also, please send us press clips about this issue
from you local press.

- Write to your Senators and members of Congress with your concerns,
and ask them to weigh in with the Justice Department and the White House.
Feel free to use the attached talking points to formulate your arguments.
Thanks to the National Asian Pacific Legal Consortium for these talking
points.

- If you have contacts with police spokespeople or local officials who
are eager to speak out on this issue, consider appearing in a press event
with them. Feel free to contact Douglas Rivlin at the Forum
(rivlin@immigrationforum.org) for advice about the press.

We will keep you posted on further developments with this Justice Department
policy change.
