There was a group of tutors who were early Laubach disciples who much preferred to teach from a religious base. The push to literacy in the 1980s broadened both the learner and the tutor base and heralded a change in the way literacy was approached by many. We still have some of the older tutors who feel that the Laubach method was and should be Bible/religion based. This is not the general feeling. As a librarian I feel I can in no way promote one set of values over another. This carries over into how I feel learning a language should be taught. To me it has also been no politics, no religion except as culture, literature, or history. If the learner asks for religious materials, I will find it. I have never offered it on my own. I am here to provide information on all sides of a question. I think the teacher who was "preaching" should have been vetted in advance and that there should be guidelines and plans. Is this a college that is religiously chartered or a public institution? There may be a conflict of interest involved. You sound on the right track to me. lmc Laura Hibbets McCaffery Readers Services Allen County Public Library 900 Webster Street Fort Wayne IN 46802 260-421-1200x2303 This is my opinion and mine alone.
