Cathy -- in past years I've several Moslem women in class. During Ramadan they
attended when they could. Yes, they may have been tired/weak from fasting, but
often it was because they were cooking the huge dinners that the families have
after sundown.

They understood that they were missing lessons, but their religious observance
was/is much more important. As a teacher/program, you probably just have to
accept it and continue as you would if several students had the flu & were absent.
If most of the students in a class are Moslem women, you may need to adjust the
schedule for a month.

I think it would be a large mistake to even suggest they MUST attend. Education
is often new for most of the women & will certainly take 2nd place to Islam and
family duties/demands.

| A teacher in WV starting up a new program wrote to me about attendance
| problems because of religious holidays. How do others cope?
|
| She says:
| Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr have lasted most of November and one week into
| December. The Arabic women in our class almost stopped attending during
| this time because of being weak and tired from fasting. This was an
| unexpected complication in beginning this new class. Do you have any
| ideas? Have you run into this before?
