Judy -- try www.Peppercorn.com They are a small publisher in NC that specializes
in materials for refugees & have (had) many stories about/for Somali women. I
think they're still in operation.

| Hello, everyone!
|
| Am looking for reading material for a Somalian woman who has entered an ESL
| program in June of this year and has moved quickly from Intro to our Level 2
| of a possible 6 Levels in what appears to be record time. She had no
| schooling in her own country at all, and could not read or write in any
| language when she came here. Now, she is reading "books" of various sources
| that are for ESL learners, but from my review the "books" seem to be of a
| rather mixed nature, that is, some seem to have "moral" or preachy tones to
| them, and some are down right scarey. The student is in her 40's, has
| children (not with her), currently lives in a women's shelter, and has
| endured incredible hardships. Nevertheless, she is determined to move
| ahead, and wants to read and learn everything she can. I have no doubt she
| will go on for her GED, and perhaps college here. In the meantime, what can
| you suggest for her, and how do I go about getting the materials?
|
| Thanks for helping me.
|
| Judy
