I think it is inevitable that we
will tend to use shorter acronyms
over longer ones. ESOL is used in
Kansas in talking about the training P-12
teachers need in order to meet the
needs of their culturally and linguistically
diverse (CLD) English language learners (ELLs).
One nice thing about ESL is that it reminds
us of Jim Cummins' emphasis on the learning
of English being an additive process rather
than supplanting a child's first language.
It is interesting to note that fully half
or more of the 5,000 readers monthly who access
our online newsletter, ESL MiniConference,
are English teaching professionals from
overseas. I think even when we take into
account the different emphases and different
resources available to English teachers in
other countries--who usually refer to what
they are doing as EFL--there are enough
commonalities that the acronym ESL still
works as perhaps the most widely used,
most generally acknowledged term for what
we all are trying to facilitate. And I agree
with the person who suggested we just call
it English, because I think ESL teachers,
particularly those who enjoy using literature
and composition, are doing something similar
to what English teachers do everywhere: helping
students understand others and express themselves
clearly through this wonderful language.
Best regards,
Robb Scott, Editor
