We read a series of folk tales from around the world. Later, as a whole class we took one story and created a script. (I think that step helped them a lot.) Next, in small groups, they chose one of the folk tales and wrote scripts and performed the stories. Some groups did them as readings, others wanted to memorize them. The nice thing about folk tales is that many of them are short so they are quite manageable for re-writes and performances. There is a site 'Aaron's RT (Reader's Theater) page that has downloadable tips for using reader's theater with learners. He mentions children, but I think the tips apply to most groups of learners. http://www.aaronshep.com/rt/index.html Good luck with it! It worked in ESL and ABE. Don't know of any scripts as all my students wrote their own.
